Your Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters are committed to serving the citizens of our county and keeping them safe. This becomes operationally challenging when units are staffed below the national standards, NFPA 1710. To protect our citizens’ lives, family, and property most effectively, we must see an increase in staffing. We remain committed to working with our County leadership to secure additional budgeting - whether through grants or other avenues - so that we can adequately protect our communities.
Dear County Executive Pittman,
As an Anne Arundel County resident and a voter, I am deeply concerned about the staffing levels in our fire department. To ensure the safety of our families, firefighters, and first responders, the county must take immediate action to hire 75 new firefighters—the maximum we can train in a single class. This would fill 14 critical 24-hour positions, strengthening emergency response capabilities across the county.
According to Chief Trisha Wolford’s December 2024 Departmental Video Update, she decided not to even apply for the SAFER Grant. This is unacceptable. We need to ensure Anne Arundel County communities have adequate protection for fire and emergency response.
I strongly urge the county, specifically Fire Chief Trisha Wolford, to reconsider and apply for the SAFER Grant to fund these essential positions. I also strongly urge YOU to accept any assistance from the Federal Government to help hire more firefighters. The safety of our community depends on it.
I will be actively watching how the county responds to this decision and will continue advocating for this issue with my neighbors, friends, and family—both in conversations and on social media.
Sincerely,© 2025 - IAFF
